Capital Hill Watch Alert

Pentagon planning to sell night-vision goggles to Iraq

The Pentagon plans to sell up to 4,000 sets of high-tech night-vision goggles to Iraq. The proposed sale represents $1.4 billion of weapons and other military gear for Iraqi forces. Included in this sale to Iraq would be cargo trucks, grenade launchers, Humvees and rifles.

Although not new to Iraq, government officials have promised to address the problem of corruption and theft. However, there is a growing sense that Iraq has slipped to new depths of lawlessness even though security has improved.

Iraq is ranked the third most corrupt nation in the world by a recent independent analysis by Transparency International, a group based in Berlin, Germany that publishes the index annually.

The Iraqi military has failed to account for weapons provided by the U.S. indicates a series of audits by various Federal agencies.

Often, the military launches its most dangerous missions after dark because night-vision goggles give U.S. troops an advantage on the battlefield.  If this technology gets into the hands of the enemies of America on the Iraqi battlefield the American troops' advantage would be greatly reduced.
