Capital Hill Review

House of Representatives

Week of January 30, 2005

Expressing the continued support of Congress for equal access of military recruiters to institutions of higher education

On February 2, 2005, the House of Representatives urged the federal government to contest a court decision that would allow colleges to limit the activities of military recruiters on their campuses as a result of the military's ban on openly homosexual people. The nonbonding resolution (Full text of Resolution [House Conference Resolution 36] )  expressing support for a 1995 law that denies defense-related funding to universities that don't provide ROTC programs and don't give military recruiters equal access to their campuses was approved by a 327-84 vote. Confirmation Alberto R. Gonzales to be Attorney General

On February 3, 2005, despite strong resistance from Democrats who argued that the former White House counsel helped contribute to detainee mistreatment at U. After the Senate voted 60-36 (To view how your senators voted visit: Vote 00003 )  to confirm Mr. Gonzales, Vice President  Dick Cheney swore him in.  Mr. Gonzales is the first Hispanic-American US Attorney General and is the 80th attorney general.

Confirmation Condoleeza Rice, of California, to be Secretary of State

Despite strong dissent from a small group of Democrats who said she shares blame for mistakes and war deaths in Iraq, Dr. Condoleeza Rice won easy confirmation on January 26, 2005, to be President Bush's new Secretary of State. To confirm Dr. Rice, who succeeds former Secretary of State Colin Powell as America's top diplomat and to become the first black woman to hold the position, the Senate voted 85 to 13 in favor of Dr. Rice.  (To view how your senators voted visit: Vote 00002 )
