National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810)

 

The House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810; Text of Legislation) on Friday, July 14, 2017, on a 344-81 vote (To view how your representative voted visit: 378  ). The measure for fiscal 2018 authorized a $696.5 billion military budget including $64.6 billion for war-fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and other theaters and more than $50 billion for active-duty and retiree health care. Also, the measure authorizes $150 million in military aid to Ukraine while increasing spending for steps to deter in Europe. what it calls Russian aggression against U.S. and NATO interests. Additionally, the legislation establishes a U.S. Space Corps within the Air Force in 2019; treats as non-binding the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia, known as INF; sets a 2.4 percent pay raise for uniformed personnel; requires a Pentagon strategy for dealing with Syria once the Islamic State is defeated; bars detainee transfers from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, military prison; authorizes 1,594,300 active-duty, guard and reserve personnel; funds programs for military victims of sexual assault and prohibits base closures, along with authorizing to fund conventional and nuclear weapons programs tens of billions.

A Democratic bid to bar funding in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810; Text of Legislation) for President Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall and other physical barriers on the U.S.-Mexico border was rejected by the House of Representatives on Friday, July 14, 2017, on a 190-235 vote (To view how your representative voted visit: 377).  In its specific language, wall funding is  neither authorized nor prohibited by the measure.

National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810)

 

On Thursday, July 13, 2017, the House of Representatives rejected to remove from the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810; Text of Legislation)  the militaries authority to fund gender-change surgeries and related hormone therapies for members of the military and their dependents on a 209-214 vote (To view how your representative voted visit: 369). To funding of related mental-health counseling the amendment did not apply.

National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810)

 

An amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R.2810; Text of Legislation)  that sought to cut the 2018 military budget in areas other than health care and personnel by one percent or $6.2 billion was rejected by the House of Representatives on Thursday, July 13, 2017, on a 73-351 vote  (To view how your representative voted visit: 357).
